When The Classic MotorCycle ran a Restoration Guide on the BSA Bantam D1 (March 2012), it stated BSA never made a plunger-sprung competition version.

This error was picked up by reader John Excell, who had bought a brand-new, plunger Competition Bantam in 1951 from Gray’s, a long-defunct dealer in the Medway Towns.
He sent a photograph to prove his point.

The photo also revealed the bike’s registration number and this rang a bell with a Yorkshire reader.
He checked and got in touch to confirm he had owned the bike since 1982!
The Bantam had already spent some time abandoned in a garden, covered by a sheet. A link was established between past and present owners.
